I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that despite my best efforts, I have a huge sweet tooth. In fact, I crave dessert after just about every meal. And you know what, it’s okay and may not even be entirely my fault (my Grandma had a huge sweet tooth too – it’s hereditary!). With all the walking I’ve been doing around the city, I’ve been sure to give myself a break when it comes to indulging in some of the best food San Francisco has to offer. After all, it’s arguably the capitol of the foodie movement and while I never considered myself one before, I’ve loved loved loved exploring the cuisine offerings here. So to document some of the greatest places I’ve been so far (sweet wise), here is a short list of some of my favorites:
Tartine Bakery (Mission):
I went here yesterday searching for something sugary after walking around trying to find vintage furniture for my new apartment. From what appears to be a simple (and perhaps retro) bakery on the outside turns into a boulangerie straight out of Paris on the inside. It was bustling when I was there around 12:30 pm and after eating one of their Pain Au Chocolat croissants, I instantly knew why. It was the most buttery, flaky, moist croissant I’d ever had and filled with a generous helping of chocolate ganache. I wanted to eat about five of them. Next time I go back I’d love to sample a morning bun (basically a muffin/cinnamon roll morphed into one and covered in cinnamon and sugar) or a chocolate hazelnut tart. Tartine also serves a pretty extensive lunch menu and I’m positive you can’t go wrong there.
Bob’s Donuts (Nob Hill)
Maybe I only like this place because it reminds me of my Dad (Bob) and his undying love of Dunkin Donuts. Or maybe I like it because their storefront window displays all of their fresh baked donuts everyday. Or maybe I like it because it’s open until like 2 am. Either way, Bob’s Donuts is amazing and about one block away from my new apartment, which makes it extremely dangerous! Also, as a disclaimer I’ve only actually had a few bites of a Bob’s Donut from a drunken boy (don’t read this mom) who gave me a bite on the sidewalk last Saturday night. But after walking passed it about 25 times since I’ve been here (and almost always seeing a line out the door) I know it’s an institution that can’t be missed.
Fraiche (Pacific Heights)
Fraiche (like the cream, pronounced ‘fresh’) is an organic frozen yogurt parlor in the swanky neighborhood of Pacific Heights. It sits right on Fillmore Street, which is super cute and full of lots of nice, higher-end shops. The yogurt is made fresh, in-store, everyday, and you can really tell the difference as compared to other chain frozen yogurt places. It just tastes more organic and less processed! The toppings are about the same as you’d get in any other yogurt shop except if you want chocolate – on the counter is a giant slab of semi-sweet that the server shaves off of and tops your yogurt (this is fun to watch). Also of note, are the giant pictures of cows and pastures that hang on their walls – another thing that reminds me of home!
